Our writing will be centered around creating a character. We will use props to help us develop our character... What does the character do for work? What does the character look like? We are always putting our pencils to the paper... writing some outstanding pieces.
Holmesville students have also been working hard to write five star sentences. Ask us about what is included in a five star sentence. In reading we have delved into reading a multitude of stories through our Treasures reading program. Each story focuses on a specific skill and includes important new vocabulary. This week we are reading a story called My Name Is Yoon. The story is about a girl, Yoon, who moves from Korea to America with her family. Yoon has trouble adjusting to her new life. Will she make friends? Each week we visit the Reading Room and pick “Just Right” Books. These stories go home nightly for homework and allow for students to practice their reading. Theme encompasses both science and social studies. We have been studying maps in relation to ourselves. Our country is the United States of America... Our state is New Hampshire... Our town is Madison. Ask us to share our "Me On The Map" projects! Once a week Ms. Kolbe-Holden, our Guidance Counselor, will come and do a class lesson with Holmesville. You may contact her for specific topics. In Math, second graders have been working diligently to learn subtraction strategies. Ask us about counting up and counting back. Which one is faster? We will be using the newest edition of Everyday Mathematics to structure and enhance math instruction. Knowing one’s math facts is essential to gaining a solid foundation for concepts. If you want to get ahead, grab some flash cards and continue practicing. Practice makes perfect! |
